Eric and I are going to pick up a treadmill tomorrow. It's a very nice one, top of the line, and my sister just bought it two years ago. She's giving it to us. Anyway it has a nice long running platform and I was thinking I could use it for Foenix too. On the days when it rains all day and I can't seem to get out I think it might be a very good thing for him.
My only concern is that I was wondering if any of you know if it treadmill conditioning shortens a dogs stride?? I heard that from someone one time and wonder if it's true. Any other points I should consider? Thanks _________________ *Jamie Bodeutsch*

Sorry Jamie, I have never used them on the dogs and I haven't heard that about them. _________________ Tammy Riley R.T. (R) K9 SAR Handler

Sorry Jamie I don't know stats on dogs either for this one but I hope you will get more use out of your treadmill than I did my Elyptical Remember I had to take it back to Costco because it didn't work? After 2 months I had lost Zero pounds!!!! But it was the one thing in the house Aron hicked his leg on. Maybe he thought the same thing of it as I did. ( okay okay yes I did thoroughly clean it before taking it back and it was hardly used) _________________ "Wag more, Bark less"

Ok. Well thanks to you both. I think we will get plenty of excersice out of it, both Eric and I and Foenix. Eric is starting to work out for the Police Dept. position he's applying for. _________________ *Jamie Bodeutsch*

I don't think it would shorten Foenix's stride, because your only going to be using it on rainy day's. I have never heard that it could shorten a dog's stride either. The dog whisperer use's treadmills too So who knows, unless they've done research on it. I plan on putting my dog's on my treadmill, on those rainy day's as well. Congrats to Eric!! _________________ Kelly S

I was not going to chime in because I know very little of treadmills for dogs but I do know they use them for sports conditioning and rehab. I would not think it would shorten his stride. But like I said, I am just thinking on this one. _________________ Gisela & Gang (all of them!)

I've never used one, but I'd heard that they are really good for conditioning during icky weather or training for an event. It shouldn't shorten his stride at all, especially since its a longer one for humans. You'll have to tell me how it works out for Feonix. _________________ Shawndra & Lily |

Thanks for the comments and advice. I never did go to get the treadmill yesterday ( only got four hours of sleep broken up into two hour increments) but will let you all know how it goes.
It will only be used as an occasional conditioning tool for when I can get him out for ball, walk or bike jog. I'm pretty excited to be able to end the guilt I feel since I just can't exercise him everyday like he is used to. _________________ *Jamie Bodeutsch*

I too heard this once but I believe it's a myth and not factual. If you use it sparingly then I don't think it's a problem.
I used to treadmill train my dog for his AD when the weather was bad. There's a few advantage. One being it's less stress ware'n tare on their joints and hips. You control the speed at which he will run at. For stamina and endurance runs you could also control the incline to build up strong hind quarters. _________________ Puck'em |

I dont think you have to worry about shortening the stride. I have been 'running' with Dagger and Della lately...2.5 miles at night. My run is the easiest trot for my two...Dag is so huge he can almost walk at times. Its doing them great good...even though their stride is short. _________________ Jodi D.

Hi,
I have been using treadmills (carpet and slat) for yrs to condition our dogs (APBT"S) for shows and have had great results.
Start out slow! 5 mins 3x a week. Each wk you can increase by a min or so, especially if you are using a human mill.
A good warm up before (stretching out the leg muscles) and afterwards a good massage and a good walk in important.
We also use an electro lite suppliment to avoid burnout, muscle tie up ect.
A treadmill with not effect a dogs stride at all. Great conditioning tool along with other things, this can be great for bad weather, times when you just cant get out.
good luck!

Anja, since you have knowledge on treadmills I was wondering if a 45inch long band is long enough for a GSD? or should it be the 50? _________________ Tanya
