DDR German Shepherds

Meeting place for breeders and owners of East German Shepherds to talk about their dogs, litters and any other related topic. There are plenty of other boards for WGR, CZ, Show and Am-line dogs; this is for at least 50 percent DDR workingline dogs only.

Well, as luck would have it, Quindt's shedding out the winter and looks like total crap right now (just like Golf did at that time of his life!) Golf was so homely at that age that I ALMOST sold him. I took him out to the SchH field though (ugly as he was at that time) and when I saw what he'd do, I decided to keep him and see how he turned out. SO glad I did! Golf turned out to be quite possibly the most beautiful dog I've seen.
Quindt is really lean, which is more obvious since he's shed all that big coat off. But as lean as he is, he's very muscular, dense, and heavy for his size I think.

Maybe he is going to be tall.... What do you feed? Has he had giardia? That stuff will really thin out their coat, just for a little while.

The list of what I DON'T feed him would be shorter.
Extremely picky eater, and his taste is different every single day! What he eats one day, he doesn't want the next. Can't figure him out, so I just poiur a couple of bowls out and let him pick nowadays. He's getting several different varieties of grain free, (Taste of the Wild, Natural balance, Nature's variety, Evo innova.....plus some raw added)
and then somedays the only thing he'll eat is Pro-Plan adult chicken and rice. Go figure.
He's been checked parasite free.

If he will eat the Proplan that is good. As much as I hate the "idea" all of my puppies go home on proplan and they do very well on it unless they can not tolerate the corn. I think I have more personal issues with it then any dogs ever have physical issues. But after a smorgasboard of puppy foods over the years Proplan is always the one I fall back too. I am tired of trying to fix something that isn't broke. It is a good food and Purina has fewer recalls than any other food distributor ( besides breeders choice which you all know I feed my adult dogs) if I could get my puppies to eat it too they would all be on it.
Not much worse than a picky eater or a dog that is finicky and does not maintain a good weight. Right now here everyone is eating good and looking good. Makes for a happy dog family! And a very happy me!! I am enjoying the fact that none of them are blowing coat right now except for Trudy!!! Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soooooo we will be waiting for those pictures Judy since you have decided to build our suspence!! Wink

I am waiting too.. Although I haven't posted any recent ones of Tika, she is shedding like crazy too and eating like a horse.

That is funny about the pro-plan puppy. I raise my Corgi pups on Science diet puppy and I HATE science diet. But they really seem to do good on it. I hate the idea of it being Corn, I have tried other puppy foods with them and always end up with Science Diet. They do great on it and it is easy for people to find.

You guys are going to gasp when you hear what my puppies eat.
Raw goats milk and ground beef. I slowly wean them off of the goats milk then they go home eating raw chicken wings and ground beef. You should see the pups around 5 wks of age crunching on those bones. I send a menu and lots of links to the new owners with a lifetime of help on the diet. Shocked

Sorry Judy to hijack the thread. Embarassed

Tammy, how do you get ALL of your clients to do the same? One of the things I have taken into great consideration is availability to my clients as well as who will do what. In the long run I would rather have a food available to everyone everywhere throughout the US and Canada then to have a puppy go to a new home and immediately switch diets also. I love the way you feed your dogs. You get the Award here as far as I am concerned for feeding your dogs and really have gone above and beyond to be a TRUE raw Feeder. To me the idea to most novice people is a dangerous one as so many people just are not ready to make that degree of commitment. I do not recommend raw feeding to new cleints who have not fed raw before. If I have a client I know has done it correctly and will not deprive nutrients from their growing puppy I am all for it. I bet your pups look great though. Like I have said before I would be fascinated to come and see your dogs eat! Cool

( sorry Judy but as long as we are waiting for pictures we might as well BS about something...... Laughing )

I agree about the raw diet being great if it's done correctly, but they have to have the vegetable carbohydrate source too, and most people just don't have it in them to process a good raw diet. I sent one puppy out, both parents had a straight a-normal pedigree. Both parents OFA good. Pup was immediately switched to a diet of nothing but raw ground turkey (and loads of it) but no carb source... Poor pup weighed 85 lbs at 6 months.. and his hips were wrecked (ya THINK?????) So I don't recommend raw for people that do not fully understand what the raw diet should be comprised of. And I spent a ton of money on the raw organic veggies, plus raw meat, ground it all up, put it together, and the 2 dogs I specifically WANTED to eat it WOULDN'T! So that was the end of that. I think they get everything they need from the kibble I feed and the occasional raw meaty bones they get with it - beef soup bones or raw chicken.
