DDR German Shepherds
Meeting place for breeders and owners of East German Shepherds to talk about their dogs, litters and any other related topic. There are plenty of other boards for WGR, CZ, Show and Am-line dogs; this is for at least 50 percent DDR workingline dogs only.

Did you pluck em?  |
NEVER!!!!!-They were cute little teensy weensy skinny white hairs. I am sorry they are gone. It would have been fun when people would ask if he was all black and I could say "no". Then I could dig in the chest hairs and find the little white ones to show.
Somehow, I can't picture him holding still for a little tweeser action.
The little monster's big boy fur is now coming in a wide stripe down his back. It almost looks like a punk mohawk. _________________ Michele

Here's a link to a conversation on another forum where the topic of blacks come into play, and how mistakenly believed a bicolor had been born from two blacks. There's also a couple of pics of a very discolored "genetic" black, that could potentially be mistaken for a bicoloor.

It's very comical to me that we call sables "red", "silver", or "black" sables. I'm not poking fun, just making an observation, becasue I use the term black sable too. AKC only recognizes SABLE (period). And in Germany, to the best of my knowledge there's no red sable, silver sable, or black sable that I've ever found articulated on their papers. They normally classify them according to how DARK they are, then they may comment on markings. You'll see grau (gray), dunkel grua (dark gray) or tief dunkel grau (deep dark gray) which is what I think most people (including me) consider a "black sable" - the really dark ones that are black-factored. I'm thinking that short of DNA, the only way to know for certain if your dark sable is black-factored (black recessive) is to breed to a black or another known black-factored sable and see if they throw blacks??
Now back to the discussion about the lighter markings on blacks...
Spence, I think the easiest way to deal with this is to do exactly as you said - advertise them as black, and before sealing the deal, make sure they know that sometimes a dog can develop minimal markings like that. Seems quite simple and final to me (I almost said black and white ). Nowhere in my contract or guarantee will I ever guarantee a color, and will not even dream of replacing a black pup that develops a little tan between the toes. But then my program has not been aimed at producing a certain color. I've bought black dogs, and found that marking on them... didn't matter a lick to me. _________________ Judy Malone

Well, a third option is photos of dogs in the pedigree, which can sometimes be a simple decipher, and other times a complex (but kind of fun) clue game. My former sable stud dog had a father who was black (two copies of the least dominant allele on the agouti loci), so that's a given he had recessive black. _________________ Daryl Ehret

This sure became an interesting subject Nice to hear everyone's opinions on this For myself I'm still going to do the look over on the black pups to make sure they don't have another color and then I will register them as an all black if their color hasn't changed. I will tell people that it could change a little down the road. When I got Zavien from Kraftwerk he was all black and hasn't changed, but when Arro was born he did have a white patch on his chest and 1 toe. He now has 11 tiny white hairs on his chest that you can't see unless you look for them and no white hairs on his toes. Since I am keeping Arro I will see if it changes or not. As far as DNA goes I am like Spence. I would get lost in it. I've only had 1 pup that I called all black that ended up with deep dark brown marking on his back legs. _________________ Kelly S
