Still alive!! I've still been a regular member of VDBL i just never posted because of the bs that erupts there all the time.
Basically I've done a lot of thinking about my whole philosophy on dogs and what they should be doing and I've completely abandoned sport. I see protection training as a useful thing, but not in the precise, nitty gritty way it is trained in schutzhund. I think obedience is absolute ESSENTIAL, but not in the flashy showy way it's done for sport, etc. I think dogs are dogs, and dogs needn't be trained to do unnatural things purely for points. A heeling dog is a controlled, obedient animal whether they are high stepping, head in front of your waste, staring at you, or walking calmly and loosely at your side.
I have also been doing a lot of realization about my path i want in life, and i've decided to forget about doing anything that doesn't involve dogs because i will never be happy that way. I am attending Triple Crown Academy in July for the Canine Training and Behavior Specialist program! I will be in your neck of the woods, G! I will be going with my psycho bitch Wicca, even though she is already pretty well trained. But I will be back in the market for another shepherd in the next year or so, which is EXTREMELY exciting to me. I feel like a part of me is missing without a shepherd with me since Damian and I am ready to be whole again!
How are YOU all doing! I've caught up a bit with Julie but I'm very curious how all my old buddies are! |

Yup, I agree 100% on the training. Ob is essential but I always describe most of it what goes around here as a utility handle. Not as in utility class but useful. Don't chase the cats (or at least come back after!) and so. Recall is the one thing I am absolutly a freak about.
Now as someone that has trained for the ring (horses) it is to absolutly essential for a well rounded trainer to at least have to show in several arenas once and not just for attendance but a bit more. The skillls learned, and even if they are not useful to the extreme, while getting ready for judgeing and then exposing oneselves to it is non negotiable in my eyes. That is why my showhorses also can go out to the pasture and work cattle (as long as me throwing a rope is not a lifesaving skill!)
Hope that makes any sense at all.
Yup, you will be in my neck of the woods. Would love for you to come and visit. Also, that reminds me to see if I could maybe get another one of my rescues enrolled in the program. Wanna work with a Heeler or BC? Got two looking for new homes. Oh and the Inchies.... _________________ Gisela & Gang (all of them!)

PS: Consider this a warning....this board is very dangerous for anyone that loves DDR dogs and does not currently own one....way too many choices!!!!! _________________ Gisela & Gang (all of them!)

Sarah,
I envy you getting to go to the Canine Training and Behavior Specialist program. I checked into that 2 years ago and I still get emails from them. I just couldn't afford to quit my job to go do what I would love to do. _________________ Tammy Riley R.T. (R) K9 SAR Handler

I KNOW! I did a bad thing and looked at the litters page.. ::shiver:: soooo hard. Luckily I have no money and live in a 2 bedroom apartment with 6 guys so i really have no choice but to not have one haha
Anyway I would LOOOOVE to work with one of your dogs! Especially a bc, you know how much I love them. I will need a green dog to do the basic obedience because Wicca is flawless at that.. I'll definitely get back to you on that one. We're allowed to bring 2 dogs with. I might actually just take a totally fresh dog if it would help it get adopted. that would be fun.. |

I totally know what you mean. I am extremely fortunate to have a WONDERFUL guy who is going to cover my rent for me while I'm gone, or else I wouldn't be able to do it at all... it is not cheap. Thank god for financial aid! |

Welcome aboard, Sarah. I can't wait to hear all about your training later this year & of course, can't wait to see pictures. _________________ Barclay

Hi Sarah so glad to have you back. What you are doing at Triple Crown is the same thing I did to become a dog trainer, although I had been training dogs for a while before I went into the program at the Academy of Canine Behavior here in Washington. Good luck--its hard work but worth everything you can learn!! I'm very excited for you. _________________ *Jamie Bodeutsch*

Thanks! I've been training for about 4 years now myself, I also apprenticed with the most successful (and best in my opinion) trainer in Atlanta for about 5 months, and really feel confident enough in my abilities where I could work now as a trainer, but certification is always a great thing, plus I'm positive I'm going to learn tons of new stuff (which is very, very exciting!) I'm sure you will all stay updated!
To be honest, the prospect of bringing my dog to work with me is the most exciting aspect of working as a trainer! I can't imagine a greater situation than that. |
