Very nice girl you have there Daryl. You might have already told me...but what are you planning to do with her as far as training or breeding? _________________ *Jamie Bodeutsch*

Well, I took her to the club today. I had her play tug with a few different people. She's very quick and aggressive for the toy, full and hard bites, nice attention for the toy. She uses her legs alot to push from you, and jumps high and fast, and will just maul you....for the toy. Jumps were descent, and work on the A-frame was really exceptional. No hesitance at all to jump, and she doesn't launch herself off the other side.
Now the bad side is, that there's not an confrontational bone in her body. I was really hoping to see her display some defensive behavior, leaving her backtied and standing some distance from her while she watched another dog doing protection work. She just watches, and not with much interest. I might have the decoy "prey tease" her next time, but overall I'm not having alot of faith in her aptitude for protection work.
So, for being a DDR dog, that is often stereotyped for having strong "civil" drive, she has about the least I've ever seen in any dog that I've watched tested. I'm just confounded by it.
Roger, you train differently, do you have suggestions? _________________ Daryl Ehret

Daryl, I really think she is still not mature. I'm sure you know and have heard these dogs are usually very slow to mature. Henry didn't have a civil bone in his body until he was turning three, and then it was an overnight change. I wouldn't give up on her just yet. I'd keep working her in prey/play, or whatever you can, until the day she kicks into maturity. _________________ Judy Malone

Well, I really appreciate the encouragement, she means alot to me. I really hope that's the case, and it's not the first time I've been told. _________________ Daryl Ehret

"Roger, you train differently, do you have suggestions"
I suggest you send her down here for training for about 10 years. lol I'll get back to you with weekly reports! LOL
The only way you will know is to test her. If you think she is mature, set her up with a pre-planned scenario off the training field. If she were mine I would take her for short drives in my truck at night and after she sees a few or many normal drives (you don't want her to think all drives end up like this)....set up a scenario with a good agitator and have them act suspicious and then aggressive at the window. If you do this, be very calm until the decoy starts and then get animated yourself just like you would...make it real as you can. Reward her aggression/defensiveness if she shows it. Praise her like she saved your life. It's ok if she gets a little nervous or even a little scared if she recovers..that's more important. Don't converse in a normal way or act normal with the "attacker". Good dogs are smart, she knows that playing on the field is a game. Inside your vehicle it's you and her and the world is outside those windows. If she has any defensiveness in her it should come out. Walk her at night some place you are not real used to, and be very aware of your surroundings..watchful and wary. She'll pick up on it. Back tie her in her yard and let someone agitate her with no equipment, when she barks at them for real have them run off. See if she's defensive of her own territory, and if she is then just start training her in increments with it. Re-evaluate what is going on at training, also. A trial field is for training sport dogs. Sport dogs don't need social aggression, they won't score points with it. No matter that people want to delve into "real" protection, anytime it's a game I believe the dogs pick up on it and know. We only get together with a lot of folks and lots of dogs once a month or so to play....mainly to socialize them and work on their control. I wouldn't evaluate a green dog too harshly with a lot of distractions at first. Sounds to me like she's very intelligent. |

Thanks Roger. I think I'll see about trying some of that, and think similar techniques are a great approach to test all dogs at some point. Right now, she's defensive of the territory. We live just outside city limits, next to some grazing fields and a long stretch that people often walk their dogs by. As a group, usually two or three dogs in the yard will run the fenceline on the two sides of the corner property, warning others to keep their distance. She is smart enough to see the training field as a game, and not a serious threat, so maybe I can get her interested with a play and prey approach to the decoy.
I would really like to hear the circumstances surrounding the situations people have experienced when this "maturity gap" is bridged. I'm convinced there must be some "turning point" that triggers it, and that there might be some sort of pattern in the stories told. _________________ Daryl Ehret
